1. Case study of the week: online data points to GoPro regaining momentum.

On 11 Jan 2017, we published a report titled “GoPro: Successful Launch of HERO5 Boosts Average Selling Price in Q4” with the use of online retail data from the US.

Weakening pricing for GoPro’s most popular products was highlighted in our previous notes (27 Oct 2016, 18 Apr 2016 and 09 Feb 2016), which pointed to saturation of the overall action camera segment.

However, the analysis of our Q4 data shows continued price improvements for the company’s cameras from Q3. GoPro decided to shift away from the low-end market and launch HERO5 which drove prices up.

Potential implications highlighted in our report: “Our analysis shows a robust quarter for GoPro action cameras, as key elements continue to improve. Pricing and market share improved QoQ and the bestseller ranking was firm, indicating sales momentum is stabilizing. The GoPro brand remains a clear leader in the action camera segment attaining a much higher average rank than competitors.”

2. Case study: China’s real estate market analyzed with transaction data.

In September 2016, Eagle Alpha analyzed China’s real estate market with the use of transaction data provided by our Chinese credit card data partner. The data enabled us to evaluate the health of the Chinese real estate market and indicated that card spend on new houses had increased across all Tier cities. The figure 1 below demonstrates that the YoY changes of this index are strongly correlated with YoY changes of Floor Space of Residential Buildings Sold (published by the National Bureau of Statistics).

In September, the number of bank card transactions on new houses increased by 31% YoY, similar to a 24% YoY increase of Floor Space of Residential Buildings Sold.
