1. Dataset of the week: UK consumer confidence search index.

Vendor Overview: Eagle Alpha analysts have spent over three years finding the best way to use online search data to improve on a baseline model of GfK Consumer Confidence approvals. The data is also generated as a by-product of people’s normal day-to-day activity, as opposed to traditional survey methods which rely on individuals or firms responding to survey questions after the event. This can avoid problems associated with non-response or inaccurate responses.

Dataset Overview:

  • History: Since 2004.
  • Geography: U.K.
  • Delivery: Excel/CSV.

Use Cases:

  • UK Consumer Confidence dataset consists of an index derived from a series of searches relating to consumer spending in the UK.
  • Our Index has a 5-year correlation of 0.96 with the US unemployment rate and an out-of-sample prediction improvement of 8% over a baseline (autoregressive) model over the same period.

Our database now has 487 providers. Contact us for more information – enquiries@eaglealpha.com.

2. Case study of the week: S8 pre-orders surpass S7’s. Samsung (KRX).

Last week we discussed our report on Samsung S8 launch and how online data supported the company’s aggressive sales target. We used Eagle Alpha’s Web Queries tool, search data and online pricing to give a read on initial reaction to the product, and some early indication on likely success.

Today, Samsung’s mobile chief said that S8 pre-orders exceeded those of S7: “It’s still a bit early, but initial response to the pre-orders that have begun at various places across the world have been better than expected.”

All the data and tools used in the report are available via Eagle Alpha. Contact us to learn more: enquiries@eaglealpha.com.
