2. Case study of the week: Footlocker’s (FL) falling same store sales anticipated by Search Signals.

On February 3rd 2017, Eagle Alpha published a research note analyzing Foot Locker’s search trends. Using Google Trends, we have built company specific indices based on search terms that are related to a given retailer’s product offering. Observing crossing points of three month and one-month moving averages of the index gains insight on momentum of Search Signals trends and the potential impact on same store sales (SSS).

The figure above shows that trends in the search indicator have been weakening throughout 2016. In our report, we noted: “The decline in the Search Signal index in the past three months’ places SSS expectations at risk this quarter, or that next quarter guidance could disappoint.”

Today, Foot Locker issued a profit warning stating that sales were impacted by income tax refund delays.
