8. Update on Eagle Alpha’s offering.

1. Dataset of the week: Employment data provider.

Vendor Overview: This vendor provides listings of job openings in the U.S. It is updated daily and has 3+ million job listings and descriptions. The data is mapped to roughly 3,500 publicly traded companies. Historical data shows the duration of job listings. This vendor also produces one of the most accurate estimates for US Non-Farm Payroll figures and provides other macro employment data.

Dataset Overview:

  • History: Since 2009
  • Geography: United States.
  • Delivery: API or CSV.

Alpha Use Cases:

  • Discover signals of labor market trends
  • Gain insights into corporate strategy and execution via hiring activities
  • Estimate job growth at a macro & micro level
  • Get insights into workforce trends and future skill demand

Example:

Testing shows that there is alpha in the data, with the variable for the number of active jobs producing the highest and most consistent returns (6-8% yearly).

Our database now has 489 providers. Contact us for more information: enquiries@eaglealpha.com.

2. Case study of the week: Interest in Samsung (KRX) S8 Weakening.

On April 5th 2017, we published a research note on Samsung S8 using Eagle Alpha’s Web Queries tool, search data and online pricing to give a read on initial reaction to the product, and some early indication on likely success.

On April 13th, Samsung’s mobile chief confirmed that S8 pre-orders exceeded those of S7. In the 8 weeks since the product launch, however, S8’s online metrics now look similar to S7’s as Twitter and search trends softened.

Therefore, the latest online data shows that it will be difficult for Samsung to reach S8’s rumored sales target of 60m units as S7’s sales reached 48.5m units in its first year.

3. Case study compilation: The document includes 12 case studies that are predominately aimed at discretionary hedge funds and mutual funds.

Asset managers constantly ask Eagle Alpha for case studies that demonstrate how alternative data can add value to their investment process. In response to this demand Eagle Alpha will regularly publish a compilation of case studies. This document is the first in this series.

The document includes 12 case studies that are predominately aimed at discretionary hedge funds and mutual funds. The case studies are relatively short-term in nature except for #8 and #9. Case studies #2, #4 and #11 are relevant to quantitative funds. In future versions of this document we will add more examples aimed at long-term discretionary investors and quantitative funds.
