2. Case study of the week: Google Trends Anticipated Increase in Burberry’s Same Store Sales

On July 10th 2017, Eagle Alpha published a research note analyzing search insights for Burberry. Our first report on Burberry came out in January 2017 when we pointed out an inflection point in search trends. The figure below shows that our index has been in an uptrend for several quarters.

In our recent report, we concluded: “After stabilizing for several months, the index has inflected upwards again and implies the company could report better SSS this quarter, or in future quarters.”

On July 12th 2017, Burberry delivered its Q1 results with same store sales increasing by 4%, double of what was expected by analysts. The stock has responded positively since the Q1 announcement.

Although this technique does risk eliminating tweets from genuine consumers, we have found it to be very effective way of isolating genuine consumer comments with a high degree of confidence. Below is an example of the query language used to isolate genuine consumer tweets.
