2. Dataset advisory: Examples of typical questions we get asked.

  • What are interesting datasets that are coming to market in H2 2017?
  • What datasets have you not included in your database?
  • What datasets are available for China?
  • If we send you a few specific research questions, can you email us the most appropriate datasets?

3. Case study: We recently started to leverage email receipt data in our Data Insight reports.

In July, we published 4 reports using the data. For three of the four companies featured in the reports our signal proved accurate. Please find summary details below.

1. Starbucks.

  • Our Conclusion: “Using email receipt data, Eagle Alpha’s predictive model for Starbucks is pointing to a weaker quarter relative to consensus revenue estimates for the June quarter”.
  • Results: Starbucks missed consensus revenue estimates. The company achieved revenues of $5.66bn versus consensus estimates of $5.75bn.

2. Paypal

  • Our Conclusion: “Using email receipt data, Eagle Alpha’s predictive model for PayPal is pointing to a strong than consensus quarter for revenue in the June quarter”.
  • Results: Paypal beat consensus revenue estimates. Reports revenues were $3.14bn compared to consensus of $3.09bn at the time of our report.

3. Chipotle

  • Our Conclusion: “There are clear signals from both email receipt data and search data that sales growth is slowing for Chipotle and current Q2 revenue estimates for the company could be too high”.
  • Results: Chipotle missed consensus revenue estimates slightly, and SSS of 8.1% missed consensus of 9.5%.

4. Papa John’s.

  • Our Conclusion: “Email receipt data and search data suggests trends are improving for Papa John’s and Bloomberg Q2 revenue estimates are slightly too low”.
  • Results: Papa John’s missed consensus revenue estimates by 1%.

4. Experts: Interview with Ray Colwell and William Gorfein, over-the-top data experts

Ray Colwell serves as CEO and William Gorfein as Chief Strategy Officer of PeerLogix, an advertising technology and data aggregation company. The company tracks and catalogs over-the-top (OTT) viewership and listenership in order to determine consumer trends and preferences based upon media consumption.

The below is an excerpt from our interview with Mr. Colwell and Mr. Gorfein. The full interview is available to clients of our Thought Leadership package.

Please provide some case studies demonstrating how OTT data could be actionable.

Over-the-Top viewership is both a forward looking and real-time gauge of interest amongst fans in the lead up to a film’s premiere. This is compared to less rigorous barometers of pre-release buzz such as social media signals that only predict curiosity and do not as reliably correlate to box office results.

We recently published a paper showcasing three cases of using OTT data to predict opening weekend theatrical success. Spider-man: Homecoming, for example, opened on July 5th and posted an estimated $117 million in its domestic opening-weekend debut. This smashed pre-release expectations and made it the highest grossing movie in the modern Spider-man franchise (inflation adjusted).

The OTT data analysis revealed a 243% increase in viewership of Spider-man 2, the previous title in the franchise, over a 30-day window prior to the July 5th release vs. average uptick of 203% for all prequels. This large degree of renewed interest led us to project a positive box office reception for Spiderman: Homecoming.

5. Events

Eagle Alpha’s upcoming events in New York:
