3. Experts: Interview with Min Kim, trade data expert.

FNGO provides high frequency and comprehensive South Korea export data to institutional investors. We arranged an interview with FNGO CEO Min Kim to understand the possibilities that trade data brings.

The below is an excerpt from our interview with Mr. Colwell and Mr. Gorfein. The full interview is available to clients of our Thought Leadership package.

What sectors and geographies does your data work well for?

South Korea export data is widely used as a proxy for measuring economic conditions in emerging markets and has historically shown significant correlation with MSCI EM index. S. Korea is also China’s largest trading partner, accounting for 10% of China’s total import (in USD value terms).

Our preliminary export data enables investors to access both volume and value for more than 160 key products that are exported from Korea to over 200 destinations. The data is collected by aggregating and analyzing customs declaration forms submitted to Korea Customs Service and the algorithm automatically categorizes HS codes into 13 key industries and 160 products.

What are examples of issues you encountered when collecting, cleansing and analyzing data?

The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, also known as the Harmonized System (HS) of tariff nomenclature, is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products. S. Korea export data is comprised of approximately 12,230 HS codes and 240 destination codes (countries). Since each HS Code does not represent a specific name of a product, our team has devoted hundreds of hours to develop an algorithm that automatically classifies HS codes into specific end-product names (e.g. – we sum 11 HS codes to create OLED panel export numbers and 27 HS codes for LCD panels). We also need to always keep track of potential changes in HS codes (newly adopted HS codes, change in classification methods etc.) for quality control purposes.

4. Case study: App data could indicate a positive inflection in HBO revenue growth.

On July 19th 2017, the app data provider Sensor Tower published a report highlighting record number of new installations of both HBO NOW and HBO GO. The network’s streaming services reached the peak of approximately 222,000 installs due to the premiere of season seven of Game of Thrones.

In a subsequent report published on August 18th, Sensor Tower stated: “The sizable influx of new subscribers reflected in our download estimates at the time drove record single-day revenue one month later as their 30-day free trials converted to paid subscriptions.”

HBO NOW rose to the top of the App Store revenue charts and grossed around $2.6 million across both the App Store and Google Play on August 16th 2017 (figure 2). It represents a 41% increase over the previous record of $1.3 million recorded on June 24th 2016.

HBO is one of Time Warner’s largest divisions but growth for the division has been slowing in recent quarters. Sensor Tower’s analysis could be an early indicator of a positive inflection in revenue growth for HBO.

LinkedIn lost its case vs. hiQ Labs. This is a major milestone regarding the legal considerations of web crawling.

It could set a precedent and dictate whether companies can block access to publicly available data. LinkedIn is expected to appeal the decision.
