 2. Thought Leadership: “Alternative Data: Use Cases” by Eagle Alpha

Today Eagle Alpha published a 90-page report titled “Alternative Data: Use Cases”.

Eagle Alpha was identified as a leader in the alternative data space in recent primers from three bulge bracket banks. These reports were well received by asset managers seeking to gain an understanding of the rapidly evolving alternative data space.

To complement these reports we have detailed the best applications and case studies of alternative data, based on our five years of experience.

This report is the third of a series of reports published by Eagle Alpha. In 2018 we will publish three new editions: Edition 4 (April 2018), Edition 5 (September 2018) and Edition 6 (December 2018).

4. Data Insights

On November 8th 2017, Eagle Alpha’s Data Insights team published a report titled “Express Inc: Alternative Data Shows Improving Trends.” We used our Search Signal indicator, based on Google search data, to conclude that Express Inc is experiencing a positive momentum which was likely to continue in future quarters.

The figure below shows that both the 1 Month and 3 MMA indices had been trending up since February of this year. In the report, we stated that “this would support current expectations for sales momentum to improve in the coming quarters.”

Express reported this morning. The company beat revenue estimates and reported SSS of -1%, compared to consensus of -2.5%. From DI report from November 8th, 2017.

5. Data Sourcing: Featured dataset – Chinese consumer transaction data.

Vendor Overview: This provider is the professional services division of one of the world’s largest payment networks by number of cards issued. Their products and services leverage the intelligence derived from the analysis of over 20 billion transactions per year.

The provider produces indices on credit card data that are updated both monthly and weekly. The are 16 indices to choose from: Real Estate, Restaurant & Catering, Luxury Hotel, Economic Hotel, Luxury Automobile, Economic Automobile, Department Store, Jewellery, Apparel, Luxury, Gas Station, Entertainment, Movie Theatre, Home Appliance, Overseas Spending, E-Commerce.

Dataset Overview:

  • History: Since 2011.
  • Coverage: 800 million card holders.
  • Geography: China.
  • Delivery: CSV.
