Alternative Data Newsletter #100 – January 10th, 2019

Important Developments

  • AAPL: On November 21st Eagle Alpha published a report that highlighted weak consumer search interest in Eagle Alpha’s Search Signal indicator and weak Twitter mentions from Web Queries data for Apple. This report followed two other reports that were published after the launch of the new iPhone’s in September that showed lack of consumer interest in the company’s new offerings. Apple recently pre-announced negatively for the quarter. Search Signals data continues to be very weak, in what should be a seasonally strong period. The indicator is weak on a global basis, indicating that weak consumer demand for Apple is not just a problem in China.
  • Eagle Alpha’s ‘Data Digest’: Eagle Alpha’s December “Data Digest” is viewable on the Data Sourcing platform. The Data Digest is a monthly report featuring Trending Data, Key Insights, Data Diagnostics Quality Testing, New Product Features and Notable Diary Events. Notable highlights in last month’s publication include top trending datasets, insight from an academic journal on credit data, a data diagnostic report on Omney Data (an in-demand pricing dataset) and an overview of the new advanced filtering and RBICS Economies tagging which have been added to the platform.
  • Data Monetization Seminars: we are planning seminars to educate vendors, VCs and PEs on how to successfully monetize data. Seminars will take place in the US (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, NYC) and in EMEA (Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, London). To register your interest please email enquiries@eaglealpha.com.
  • Category Values: Factset published a survey that highlighted which categories of alternative data they value most.

  • What we’re reading this weekStructuring ML projects so they can grow. Machine learning models are often run with different versions of datasets, but using a code-focused version control to manage the dataset associated with specific models is a challenge. This article introduces lazydata, a version-tracking library specifically designed for datasets.
