Alternative Data Newsletter #155 – February 14th, 2020

Key Highlights

  • Tracking the Coronavirus Outbreak with Alternative Data: we hosted an online Alpha Workshop that demonstrated concrete examples of how alternative data can help track the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the market. Top takeaways from our presenters are listed below. If you would like to speak further on any of these topics please reach out – enquiries@eaglealpha.com.
    • The number of infected people seems to be declining which looks suspicious compared with what actually happens with an epidemic with a logical model. It looks as though they are either running out of testing kits, they’re not able to test everybody or there actually is under-reporting of the data.
    • Airline traffic data over the last four weeks suggests the most dramatic reduction in capacity from one event ever. The airline industry lost 10 million seats to and from China.
    • The likely revenue impact to a selection of airline carriers is estimated to be nearly $2 billion.
    • Hundreds of millions of Chinese have been staying at home for over two weeks now. Email receipt data indicates that the number of iQiyi (streaming service) subscribers has grown by about 30% in the last month.
  • Beta-Testers: we are welcoming beta-testers for a new Eagle Edge dashboard based on a US autos inventories dataset. The dashboards provide timely and granular data on US autos inventories, sales, and pricing. Contact us to learn more.
  • Research Analyst Thoughts: Under Armour (UAA) sold off sharply after reporting a weak earnings report earlier this week. A Sales Signals report from Eagle Alpha on January 13th highlighted that consumer search interest for UAA products was weak and that it was a warning sign for consensus growth rates.  UAA revised growth rates for 2020 on the earnings call and it now appears growth is more in line with consumer search interest.

Alpha Capture

Last Friday, an employment data provider correctly predicted the January non-farm payroll number with 225,000 jobs added to the U.S. economy. Their forecast was significantly higher than the Bloomberg consensus of 165,000 jobs which clearly demonstrates the value of using alternative data over traditional sources. This forecast was submitted to our Alpha Capture system a full day ahead of the official numbers. Eagle Alpha clients can view this idea and 250+ more ideas by clicking here. For more information on our Alpha Capture product please email alphacapture@eaglealpha.com.

Dashboards

The Data Analytics team publish a report on HP Inc. (HPQ) last week showing positive consumer demand trends from our Sales Signals dataset. Positive data points on pricing and share of bestsellers were also observed for HPQ from our US consumer Electronics dataset. Both sets of data are longer-term in nature and are encouraging for HPQ fundamentals in the coming quarters.

Case Study

Under Armour (UAA) sold off sharply after reporting a weak earnings report earlier this week. A Sales Signals report from Eagle Alpha on January 13th highlighted that consumer search interest for UAA products was weak and that it was a warning sign for consensus growth rates.  UAA revised growth rates for 2020 on the earnings call and it now appears growth is more in line with consumer search interest.
