Eagle Alpha has been doing a lot of work on datasets that can be applied to the economic impact of Coronavirus on both a macro and company level. Our work shows there are many relevant datasets that can be used. We are hosting a Webinar on this tomorrow, Friday, March 13th.

We are hosting a call for Eagle Alpha clients only at 10 am EST/2 pm GMT. Please register here

Eagle Alpha Conferences. Due to the global impact of Coronavirus Eagle Alpha plans to host our first alternative data conference from Sydney via videoconference. Attendance to the video conference will be extended to the whole APAC region. Due to the disruption, we are working on our agenda for the conference and we will inform those interested when it is available. We will also post the new agenda to the Eagle Alpha website. At a high level, the video conference will be a morning of presentations and speakers followed in the afternoon by a smaller focused session on data science.

Quality Testing

Eagle Alpha’s Data Science team recently published a Jupyter notebook-based Data Quality report on a dataset that tracks human capital and employment information across 1000s of public and private companies.

Clients of Eagle Alpha’s Data Sourcing offering can access the report here.

With Alpha Capture, data vendors submit trade ideas or forward-looking use cases based on interesting insights from their datasets, which gives fund managers the first-ever opportunity to value alternative datasets and ascertain, at scale, the real potential for alpha. Email to learn more.

There has been significant disruption in the oil patch this week with the news from OPEC about cutting oil prices. Examining the LinkUp Job Listings dashboard hosted on Eagle Edge we have observed that oil patch related employment in the Huston Texas and Midlands Texas areas have already been trending negative since Q32019.

Case Study

On March 12th Eagle Alpha published a case study on using satellite data from RS Metrics. Using satellite data RS Metrics measured the potential impact of the COVID-19 on production and inventory levels for copper and aluminium in China. This impacts many companies connected to the metals supply chain. The data can also be used to measure the potential impact on the Chinese economy. The data also showed that an inventory build of metals could lead to excess supply later in 2020.

Legal & Compliance

An article in the Financial Times on February 19th, 2020 highlighted a new proposal from the EU with regard to “big data” companies such as Google and Amazon. In the “European Strategy for Data” document from the European Commission said it was looking into “the need for legislative action” to push companies to share and pool data. The commission’s digital and competition chief Margrethe Vestager, said that areas such as the financial sector has to share data but Amazon does not have to share data, giving the impetus to force tech companies to open up their data.
